Dirt steps leading to the upper seating area made for an unsafe walking path for the elders. You can see the old wash facility on the left.
Upper seating area before
Filled with years-old construction debris, rocks sand and dirt, there was no place comfortable for the elders to gather and sit.
Two elders visiting
Here, two elders visit in the upper seating area before the improvements.
View to street, before
A view from the grounds to the street below. It was virtually impossible to get through the overgrown thickness of brambles and weeds, even though there is an ancient walkway and steps built into the hillside.
The old wash facility
On the verge of crumbling, the old wash facility had a traditional pan toilet in the room on the right and hot and cold running water in the room on the left. Up on the roof is a water cistern. Badly damaged during the 2015 earthquakes, the building was cracked and leaning.

Two elders rest in the shade of the juniper bush before improvements were made. To the right, you can see another set of uneven steps leading to the upper seating area.
General area after, #2
An elder suns herself while the new puppy guards her safety. The steps to the right have been removed and a rounded brick wall added with planting area above.
General area after
The uneven dirt steps are gone and replaced with a smooth ramp, as well as a railing for added safety.
New wash facility
Three traditional pan toilets, one in each room, are now available to the right in this photo. The room to the left is the wash room with hot and cold running water. A second floor houses the office and storage for food and supplies, and frees up two rooms in the dorm building, which gives the facility the capacity to house six more elders.
Upper seating area, after
The majority of the debris is gone and a smooth cement area is now in place, with planting areas along the sides. In the middle, a round planter for a future bush or small tree to provide shade.
Upper area after, #2
Another view of the improvements with plenty of room for benches and chairs and less risk of twisting ankles. The second floor of the new wash facility can be seen on the left.
View to street, after
As a result of the clean up, the hillside leading down to the main road has been cleared of debris. The public toilet remains at the bottom of the property, but with this access comes an unsafe situation for the elders: We need a new gate across the lower section for night times.
